CBI Spl Court extends custody of Karti

The Supreme Court had allowed Karti to withdraw his writ petition against the ED summons and asked acting Chief Justice of the High Court to allocate the matter to a suitable bench for hearing. Karti had moved the court seeking quashing of summons and all proceedings initiated by the ED in the case.

A case was filed against Karti by the Enforcement Directorate in May previous year alleging irregularities in the grant of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving foreign investment of over Rs. 300 crore in 2007.

His custody, initially extended by five days on 1 March, was again extended by three days to 9 March so that the CBI could question him over the matter.

"So we need six more days of police custody".

Extending Karti Chidambaram's custody, the court told the CBI to confront him with the Chartered Accountant at Tihar Jail.

INX Media is being probed by both CBI and ED over allegations that Karti Chidambaram had received kickbacks from the media house. Allegedly, he has facilitated FIPB approvals of the company when his father P. Chidambaram was the finance minister in the then ruling UPA government.

The ED had registered a case against him and others in May previous year.

He illegally took service charges for getting the FIPB clearance to the INX Media for receiving funds from overseas worth Rs 305 crore in 2007 when his father was the finance minister in the Congress-led UPA Government.

The High Court will in most likelihood deal with his prayer Friday morning while his prayer for bail before the special CBI judge in the Patiala Courts here is listed at 2 PM on completion of his extended custody of nine days to the CBI.

While granting the protection, the Bench said it was yet to decide the constitutional validity of Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act which deals with the ED's power to arrest.

According to ANI, the CBI filed another application seeking the court's permission to produce Indrani and Peter Mukerjea for confronting them will all accused in the case.
