On Monday, the day before Tillerson's termination, a White House spokesperson criticized a reporter for indicating that there may have been a split between Trump and Tillerson.
Tillerson's departure follows months of tension between him and Trump.
Pompeo is widely seen as a loyal ally of Trump.
"What is most important is to ensure an orderly and smooth transition during a time that the country continues to face significant policy and national security challenges", Tillerson said at the State Department.
The president, of course, took notice. This move placed the decision in the hands of Congress, and Republicans chose not to place new sanctions on Iran, which would have effectively ended the agreement. Tillerson was working with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to slow-walk the delivery of military options to the president, apparently out of fear that the president might actually act on them. Trump told reporters before departing on Marine One, "I'll be speaking to Rex over a long period of time".
Weeks before the summit's announcement, Trump humiliated Tillerson by publicly rejecting his calls for the resumption of diplomatic talks between Washington and Pyongyang, without preconditions.
"Rex is a good man, I like him a lot and I wish him good things, but I think he will be happier now".
He appeared to be caught by surprise last week when Trump announced he had accepted Kim's invitation to meet.
The president also had rejected Tillerson's advice to stick with USA commitments to the Paris climate change accord and an Asia-Pacific free trade deal. The comments generated headlines coming from Tillerson, who retired from his position as CEO of oil and gas giant ExxonMobil after Trump nominated him to serve as the secretary of state. "It's disappointing that the president has made a habit of firing the nation's highest-ranking officials in the most demoralizing ways possible - causing unnecessary chaos, demonstrating his poor leadership, and sending the message that no one is truly a respected member of his administration".
In a January 13 cable, the State Department sketched out a path under which the three European allies would simply commit to try to improve the deal over time in return for Trump keeping the pact alive by renewing sanctions relief in May. "If Ms. Haspel seeks to serve at the highest levels of US intelligence, the government can no longer cover up disturbing facts from her past". He has also criticized special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the election and potential ties to his campaign.
Some said Washington may take a harder line under Pompeo and the Europeans may be under more pressure to offer concessions, while others suggested his views on the deal have evolved and he may be better placed to influence Trump to keep it.
According to the USA government website on agriculture, Kansas exported $307 million in agricultural products to Canada in 2016, through a two-way trading relationship worth $539 million. He is a hard-line former Republican House member who politicized the Central Intelligence Agency, shares the presidents unfortunate opposition to the Iran nuclear deal and questions whether the standoff with North Korea can be resolved with diplomacy.
