Kentucky Seeks to Increase Benefits after Officer's Death

Law enforcement agencies in Frankfort, Ashland, Carrollton and Johnson County were among those posting Facebook condolence messages to the Pikeville Police Department and Hamilton's family.

According to Kentucky State Police, Officer Scotty Hamilton and Trooper Matt Martin were conducting a criminal patrol on Hurricane Creek when they encountered a suspicious vehicle in the area.

While canvasing the area Officer Hamilton and Trooper Martin were separated.

That's when Martin heard a gunshot and returned to find Hamilton with a fatal gunshot wound, police said.

According to our sister station, WKYT, troopers say they have captured 55-year-old John Russell Hall in the Stony Brook community of Pike County near the Floyd County line.

"They had a presence in the area due to past known incidences of drug trafficking", Kentucky State Police Post 13 Public Information Officer Jody Sims told reporters during a news conference Wednesday.

Hall was arrested without incident at 11 a.m. Thursday.

Two days after an eastern Kentucky police officer was killed on the job, some state lawmakers have voted to greatly increase benefits for his widow.

Sinms said police arrested four people at the scene on charges unrelated to the shooting, and that police are searching for the alleged shooter. He is survived by a wife and one infant child.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at the Expo Center.
