Miles Bridges outlasted Zach Thomas, scoring 29 points and grabbing nine rebounds to help second-seeded Michigan State hold on for an 82-78 win over Bucknell on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. "That's got to change if we're going to be moving on".
Playing in his hometown with a chance to add another highlight-reel shot to this year's NCAA Tournament, Cassius Winston missed an opportunity to win the game for the third-seeded Spartans with a shot from about 45 feet just before the buzzer. TCU and Syracuse played in front of a handful of fans who at times seemed as interested in periodic Virginia-UMBC updates as what was going on in front of them on the court. The Spartans, flummoxed by Syracuse's 2-3 zone, didn't make a basket in the last 5:41.
The spread opened with Michigan State as an 8-point favorite and has slowly worked its way up to 9 points over the last 48 hours.
Here is all the information you need for this afternoon's game, including start time, TV, radio and live stream.
The concept of physicality is likely to be a critical one when the Orange (22-13) face Michigan State (30-4) in a second-round NCAA Tournament match-up that will be a battle of length vs. strength. Syracuse was outstanding on the defensive end against the high-scoring Horned Frogs and pulled away late after a Frank Howard jumper gave the Orange a 54-49 lead with just 1:31 left in regulation.
Michigan State relied on its best option to shake off the pesky Bison. "I've seen too many guys when the guy makes a 3 and it goes into overtime". I've known him ... probably close to 40 years now.
All five Spartans starters scored at least 10 points, including Morris Peterson, who led all scorers with 21 points. SU would have faced No. 2 Michigan State in that game if not for the Blue Raiders' monumental 90-81 first round upset.
While the two teams will be hard at work, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim shares a deep respect for his counterpart on the Michigan State sideline.
Michigan State may have a rough offseason because it will likely lose Bridges and freshman Jaren Jackson to the National Basketball Association draft and the school's crisis on campus isn't going away anytime soon. Matt McQuaid was quickly fouled after the ball was inbounded and made both free throws. While they beat TCU, they only scored 57 points in the win.
"That's the difference in the game", Izzo said. Nevada (28-7) erased a 14-point, second-half deficit in Nashville, and tied it at 68 when Jordan Caroline hit one of two free throws with 3.8 seconds left in regulation.
