Caste protests across India leave at least four dead

The police blamed anti-social elements over the incident.

The lower castes also referred to as Dalits were instigated by the opponents of the ruling party ( the BJP) to start an agitation.

Gwalior's Superintendent of Police Ashish told IANS that 50 rioters had been taken into custody and were being questioned. In Muzaffarnagar, we have evidence to prove that anti-social elements with criminal cases against them got mixed with protesters and indulged in violence.

One Pradeep Jatav succumbed to bullet injuries, sustained during clashes between the bandh supporters and opponents, late last night in Bhind district, Collector Ilayaraja T told PTI over phone.

"A complaint was received against two constables in Bhind in connection with the death of Mahavir Rajwat who had suffered gunshot on Monday and died later", IG (Law & Order) Makrand Deuskar said to News18.

The police have booked two cops in connection with the death of a person in police firing.

Bahujan Samaj party leader and former UP chief minister Mayawati extended her solidarity and support to the protest but strongly condemned the violence it has caused in its wake.

As a constituency voting for it since 2014 exploded in anger, the Centre found its voice on Monday evening with home minister Rajnath Singh and others tweeting the government's commitment to the socially disadvantaged.

"The instances of violence and discrimination are not always individual but in fact often involve large-scale massacres, horrific collective crimes, and public humiliation", Dr Ashar said.

The Dalit caste took to the streets after the Supreme Court ruled the police couldn't immediately arrest someone after the filing of official charges under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
