Capella is being held in a cell in the Vatican's police force, the Corps of the Gendarmerie.

The Vatican on Saturday arrested a diplomat recalled from Washington previous year amid investigations in Canada, the United States and the Vatican for possession of child pornography.

The Vatican on Saturday explained Monsignor Carlo Capella has been held in gendarmerie barracks in the Vatican, also that his arrest follows a Vatican investigation.

Capella was recalled from the U.S. Nunciature in Washington, September 2017, after the Vatican was informed August 21, by the U.S. State Department, that there was a "possible violation of laws relating to child pornography images" by a member of the Holy See's diplomatic corps.

Police at the Vatican have arrested a priest who previously worked at the Holy See's USA embassy on suspicion of possessing child pornography.

After Capella was recalled to Rome, police in Windsor, Canada said they had issued an arrest warrant for him on suspicion of possessing and distributing child pornography on the internet. In addition, authorities say he is believed to have been a scout leader with the Boy Scouts of America, and a swim instructor for children for several years.

A Niagara Falls man who is currently on parole for a 2011 manslaughter conviction in the death of his 22-month-old daughter now faces federal charges of receiving and possessing child pornography. The Vatican said it would investigate the case.

Mgr Capella, 50, was born in Italy and ordained to the priesthood in 1993 for the Archdiocese of Milan. He had worked since the summer of 2016 at the Vatican nunciature in Washington.
