1 killed in fire at Trump Tower in New York

Videos posted to social media showed flames and smoke billowing from the structure's windows.

The Fire Department had not yet determined a cause for the fire.

Two hundred New York City firefighters and emergency medical services workers responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m.

President Donald Trump previously lobbied against a proposed bill requiring high-rise buildings, like Trump Tower, to install life-saving sprinkler systems.

The president maintains the building's top three floors as his residential home. As you can imagine, the apartment is quite large, we are 50 stories up. Fireman (and women) did a great job. Residents and employees were evacuated from the skyscraper and about 200 firefighters worked to put out the blaze on the 50th floor of the building, four of whom sustained minor injuries.

President Donald Trump, his wife Melania and son Barron were not in the NY apartment this weekend, where he maintains a three-story penthouse residence.

NY fire commissioner Donald Nigro said the 50th floor apartment was "virtually entirely on fire". Six firefighters were also injured in the fire, ABC reported.

ABC News reported that the victim, Todd Brassner, was pulled unconscious from his apartment at the luxury Fifth Avenue sky scraper and died later at the hospital. It was brought under control shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, about an hour after Trump's tweet, fire officials said.

Several residents also spoke of the fear and chaos that erupted after they realized their building was on fire.

Some smoke reached some of floors above the fire, he said, but it was unclear if it had reached Mr. Trump's residence.

After a fire in a residential building in 1999, then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani called for the sprinkler legislation, putting him at odds with his longtime friend. The headquarters of the Trump Organisation is on the 26th floor. "My husband is disabled and we were helpless".
