Canelo Alvarez suspended from boxing for six months

New Undisputed King of Cinco De Mayo to Make Record-Tying 20th Consecutive World Middleweight Title Defense Saturday, May 5 at StubHub Center Live on HBO World Championship Boxing®.

The middleweight champion has found a replacement for Canelo Alvarez, who has been suspended for six months by the Nevada Athletic Commission for failing two drug tests.

Alvarez will be eligible to return in August. And that should be financially convenient for Las Vegas, as it keeps Golovkin-Alvarez II lined up for Mexican Independence Day weekend in September, if all parties are so inclined. Recent reports suggest that Vanes Martirosyan- a natural junior middleweight who has been inactive for almost two years- is now the focus of Team Golovkin.

"Martirosyan is an experienced fighter who has faced and defeated important fighters".

Jaime Munguia- a 21-year-old Tijuana native, who was fighting at welterweight as recently as last year- was rejected as a Golovkin opponent by the commission as someone unable to provide proper opposition to an elite-level star like "Triple G" and Irishman "Spike" O'Sullivan turned down an offer by Golovkin's people because of the relatively lowball money involved. Vanes Martirosyan brings a passionate Armenian fan base from nearby Glendale and an aggressive style of fighting. Loeffler acknowledged the letter from the IBF and told ESPN that Golovkin plans to fight May 5 and said their side will seek an exception, adding that he hopes the IBF will grant one.

Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn said yesterday that he wants to stage the fight on September 15 at Wembley. "When they asked me if I'd take this fight, I said yes. I do believe in my heart I'm going to beat (Golovkin) because he's never fought someone with my style".

While the first bout between the two was months in the making, Alvarez's suspension and this unexpected delay could perhaps heighten interest and intrigue for a rematch that the boxing world already pegged as the most anticipated fight of the year.

"Vanes dropped [Demetrius] Andrade; he lost a close decision to [Jermell] Charlo that a lot of people thought he won and he lost a competitive fight with Erislandy Lara".
