Ex-police officer suspected of being serial killer charged with murder

Newlyweds Keith and Patty Harrington were killed in August 1980.

Authorities believe DeAngelo is responsible for killing 12 people and committing 45 rapes in the 1970s and '80s. Investigators have noted that the Original Night Stalker appears to have been motivated by anger.

The arrest is reportedly connected to two separate double murders: Brian and Kate Maggiore, who were shot while walking their dog in 1978 near the Sacramento County area where the East End Rapist was active; and Lyman and Charlene Smith, who were shot to death in their home in Ventura County after the suspected serial rapist moved further south in the state and began regularly killing his victims.

On the back of the map, the word "punishment" is written.

The FBI also launched a website documenting the search for the East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer.

The attacker who became known as the "East Area Rapist" is accused of at least 12 murders, 45 rapes and dozens of burglaries across the state.

Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, who was sacked from the Auburn Police Department, was arrested after a DNA sample came back as a match to the Golden State Killer, Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said.

Komos says he was going to continue investigating the East Area Rapist case this weekend.

He's believed to be a white male, now between the ages of 60 and 75 years old and approximately 5-foot, 10-inches tall.

An elderly former police officer was arrested and charged in four murders authorities attributed to the Golden State Killer, a serial criminal suspected of dozens of rapes and slayings that terrorized parts of California during the 1970s and 1980s. His last known crime was in May 1986.

He would then shine a flashlight into their faces, tie them up, ransack the house, and rape female victims, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said. Through DNA evidence recovered in recent days he was linked to being the Golden State Killer. If their husbands were home, they were often tied up during the attack. He died in 2008.

Janelle Cruz was 18-years-old when she was murdered in 1986 in Irvine.

DeAngelo, who was also a police officer in Exeter, in Southern California, from 1973 to 1976, was taken into custody without incident as officers surprised him at his Sacramento-area home, Jones said. He tied them up and threatened to kill the woman, who broke free and alerted neighbors by screaming.

"We will pull out all the stops for our Sacramento-area law enforcement partners in this horrific and historic case", the statement said.

She was the wife of comedian Patton Oswalt and predicted in the tome that the killer would be arrested "soon". "This person ruined a great number of lives, and he should be held accountable".

She said she has spent almost all of her free time researching the case.

"I just can't tell you how I feel". "I no longer have to live in fear".

"He added, "'I think you got him, Michelle".

Law enforcement officials are still working out in which county DeAngelo will be prosecuted.

Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said DNA helped solve the case. "We did not know anything about DNA".

"This was a truly a convergence of emerging technology and dogged determination by detectives", Jones added.

In praising the impact of DNA evidence, Harrington called on California residents to sign a petition in support of the "Reducing Crime and Keeping California Safe Act of 2018". Harrington, a Newport Beach developer, was a major proponent of Proposition 69 after his brother's death. That statute helped establish the requirement that all arrested adult and juvenile felons provide DNA samples to build the California DNA database. "For the 51 who were brutally raped, sleep better tonight". "He isn't coming through the window". "He's in jail, and he's history".
