Rent Dispute May Have Sparked Fatal Mill Valley Shooting

Detectives worked through the night investigating the Thursday afternoon shooting of two people at a Mill Valley apartment complex by an 80-year-old suspect who was found dead that evening, sheriff's officials said.

Less than two hours after the shooting police were seen breaking down a door at the complex, where they discovered the elderly gunman had been killed by an apparent gunshot wound.

Investigators say this was possibly a dispute between a landlord and tenant.

A deputy arrived within two minutes and found a man and woman both suffering from gunshot wounds.

At 3:38 p.m., the Marin County Sheriff tweeted about an active shooter situation in the 900 block of East Blithdale Avenue and declared a shelter in place. The landlord is still in the hospital, but expected to survive.

The apartment complex was surrounded by SWAT officers, residents were hastily evacuated and parents rushed to a nearby day care center to pick up their children.

Cops described the suspect as a local 80-year-old male. Deputies carried the victims from the scene to ambulances according to Sergeant Brenton Schneider with the Marin County Sheriff's Department.
