American Hockey League: Record-breaking game spans two days

The Phantoms win game four, 2-1 in the fifth overtime to take a commanding 3-1 lead over the Charlotte Checkers in the series.

The winning goal was scored at 1:10 a.m. local time in Charlotte.

Michael Leighton made 98 saves for the River Rats in a marathon that coincidentally also featured the AHL affiliates of the Flyers and the Hurricanes. It surpassed the Philadelphia Phantoms' 3-2 win over the Albany River Rats in 2008 that lasted 142 minutes, 58 seconds. Lyon was the Frank Brimsek victor as the top high school goalie in the state in 2011 and was a three-year standout at Yale. He stopped 94 of 95 shots, the second-highest total in league history.

The Stanley Cup playoffs are known for being one of the most thrilling and grueling postseason spectacles in all of sports, but the NHL's minor league affiliate - the American Hockey League - also brings its fair share of playoff insanity.

Krushelnyski cruised into the slot and took a feed from Cole Bardreau, who was behind the net, before snapping a shot past Charlotte goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic to give the Phantoms a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The Grand Rapids Griffins, by the way, have gone into a third overtime twice in playoff games, in 2001 against Orlando (4-3 loss) and in 2006 at Toronto (6-5 win).

There are plenty of heroes in a five-overtime hockey game, but it's safe to say the winning goalie and the game-winning goal scorer are a the top of the list.
