The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights said Saturday that 11 Iranians were among the pro-regime fighters killed in strikes by Israel, which has vowed to prevent Iran gaining a military foothold in neighbouring Syria. Whoever prepares themselves to attack us will be attacked first.
Just one hour after Donald Trump violated the Iran nuclear deal on May 8, Israel launched missiles against targets south of Damascus, Syria, reportedly killing 15 people, at least 8 of them Iranians.
A prominent Iranian ally in Lebanon joined the verbal volley on May 10, warning that both Israel and the United States will face retaliation for repeated Israeli air strikes in Syria that monitors say have killed dozens of Syrian, Iranian, and Hizballah fighters in recent weeks.
"Decisions on the Iranian side took longer than expected, global banks were reluctant to work with Iran and the recent decline in the value of (Iran´s currency) made worldwide business even more hard", she said.
Israel blames Hezbollah for attacks on its interests overseas including in Argentina where the 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy kills 29 people and a 1994 attack on a Jewish community centre leaves 85 dead.
Israel has long warned that it will not accept Iran entrenching itself militarily in neighbouring Syria, where the Islamic Republic is supporting President Bashar al-Assad's regime in the civil war.
The Syrian army said in a statement on Syrian TV: "A new Israeli aggression was confronted yesterday and our air defence system was successful in intercepting a major number of the Israeli missiles that targeted Syrian military positions".
From Wednesday into Thursday morning, Iranian and Israeli forces exchanged blows directed at military positions.
In February, Israel shot down what it said was an armed Iranian drone that entered Israeli airspace.
Al-Khalifa copied claims made by Israeli authorities, praising the attack as a response to an Iranian rocket attack from the Syrian territory against Israeli military bases in the occupied Golan Heights.
"We will not allow Iranian entrenchment in Syria no matter the price to pay", Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman says in April.
Israel said among the targets were weapons storage, logistics sites and intelligence centers used by elite Iranian forces in Syria. This latest round of attacks comes days after President Trump pulled the USA out of the deal that regulated Iranian nuclear ambitions.
Israel and Iran have never been directly at war.
In Iran's first official reaction to the attack, the Friday report quotes Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi.
The comments, by Vladimir Kozhin, an aide to President Vladimir Putin who oversees Russian military assistance to other countries, follow a visit to Moscow by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week, who has been lobbying Putin hard not to transfer the missiles.
