Fred’s nearly a Red but can the sleepwalking Brazilian rouse Man United?

The Brazilian was a key man in the Shakhtar Donetsk side and won the Ukrainian Premier League title on three occasions for the club.

"He is a wonderful player", Rivaldo told Sky Sports.

Fred made his Brazil debut in November 2014 and, due to an injury to Luiz Gustavo, was a starter by the time of Brazil's disappointing 2015 Copa America campaign.

Fred made his global debut for Brazil in 2014 under Dunga and was called up for the 2015 Copa America following an injury to defensive midfielder Luiz Gustavo.

United need to bolster their squad if they are to renew their challenge against cross-city rivals Manchester City, who they trailed by 19 points in last season's Premier League.

To be fair to him, this is a tough job as he went in there after Louis van Gaal, who took Man United backwards, and he has got to try and build them up to Manchester City levels again.

The potential signing of Fred is an interesting one as he is in many ways quite similar to Paul Pogba.

While it is interesting that Mourinho is signing a similar-ish player to the Frenchman, there is no reason why they can not complement each other in a midfield three. Darmian has been linked with Juventus and Blind is a target for Inter Milan.

In terms of where he would play, Mourinho switched from his traditional 4-2-3-1 formation to a 4-3-3, which did see United improve their style of play marginally.

Fred is renowned as a box-to-box all-action central midfielder.

Anything else we should know about?

Fred's career has been pretty successful thus far.

The 25-year-old completed his deal to move to Old Trafford from Shakhtar Donetsk yesterday (Tuesday) after successfully completing a medical earlier in the week. However, FIFA extended the punishment to a worldwide ban in 2016 which ruled him out for four months.
