Vienna being considered as venue for possible Putin-Trump summit

China's President Xi Jinping and Russia's President Vladimir Putin shake hands during Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China Sunday.

Speaking from China where Putin was attending a regional security summit, Peskov said that in their last telephone conversation on March 20 the Russian and USA leaders had also mentioned possibly meeting in Vienna.

On Friday, Trump shocked US allies by calling for Russian Federation to be readmitted to the Group of Seven wealthy industrialized nations.

Both leaders also issued a joint declaration pledging to preserve the global accord on Iran's nuclear programme which the United States withdrew from last month.

Mr Putin, speaking during a visit to China, said: "We did not choose to leave it, our colleagues refused to come to Russian Federation due to known reasons at some point".

"The very fact that we confirm the high level of our interaction and talk about the need for its development, in my opinion, is of great importance, for contemporary global relations, for Russian-Chinese relations", he said.

He emphasized that the Islamic Republic has so far lived up to all its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has so far confirmed Iran's commitment to the terms of the deal.

Before the medal ceremony, Putin said the two heads of state had enjoyed "fruitful" talks.

He emphasised that the bloc's members, who also include China, four ex-Soviet Central Asian nations, as well as India and Pakistan, are anxious about the United States move.

Xi said China's "highest honour" is bestowed on foreigners who have made "outstanding contributions" to the country's modernisation drive and helped maintain world peace.

Putin said trade and investment among SCO countries was growing and Russian Federation and China would propose a Eurasian economic partnership for all member states.

"There have been no concrete agreements or understandings, and no specific discussions are being conducted now", Peskov said.

Despite those comments, Putin reportedly said he's willing to meet with Trump, "as soon as the US side is ready".

Putin said that Washington's decision to exit the agreement could "destabilize the situation" in the region.

The Chinese president said the three countries should push the construction of the China-Mongolia-Russia economic corridor, actively explore cooperation in areas such as infrastructure interconnectivity, and promote sub-regional cooperation in adjacent areas of the three countries.

China also expects to enhance its anti-terrorism cooperation with Pakistan, Xi said.
