Mexico stun champions Germany

Germany came into Russian Federation 2018 tipped as favorites by many, looking to become the first team to retain the World Cup since Brazil in 1962. A Colombian who is bilingual and lived in the United States, Osorio had not been forgiven for a 7-0 loss to Chile in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Copa America. Germany applied nearly unbearable pressure for what seemed like hours.

Sami Khedira and Hector Moreno fall after attempting to head the ball. More movement, decisiveness and precision are badly needed, as well.

Lozano, Javier Hernandez, Carlos Vela formed a three-man frontline and they had the Germans on their toes from the start with their slick passing and running.

'I think they all know how good they are.

The win has also helped Mexican fans move beyond the team's recent indiscretions after the squad entered the tournament under a cloud of scandal. Germany then dominated but when it broke through the Mexican defence, the shooting was poor.

Low revealed during a press conference on Saturday that PSG midfielder Julian Draxler would be a definite starter for the match against Mexico this afternoon, and so questions quickly turned to Ozil's position in the starting XI.

Mexico continued to threaten, Miguel Layun narrowly unable to latch onto a through ball, but their goal arrived 10 minutes before the break as Germany were again sliced apart.

In Mexico City, around 20,000 fans gathered to celebrate the victory at the Angel of Independence monument on the capital's most famous boulevard, Paseo de la Reforma. Kimmich's absence meant Ozil was left trying to stop Lozano for Mexico's opening goal.

Ten minutes later Kroos went close as well for Germany when he fired a shot from the edge of the box centimetres wide of the post with the keeper beaten.

"We were warned (in the warm-up games)". From there, they had Germany rattled and fully deserved the goal from Hirving Lozano when it came. Nearly immediately, they had a chance to level only for Guilhermo Ochoa to push Kroos' free-kick onto the bar with his fingertips.

"It's a great result and shows our hard work".

On the hour mark, Loew sent Marco Reus on for his major tournament appearance with Germany.

It should have been the moment of magic that propelled the five-time champions to a comfortable win against the organised but hum-drum European outfit. Otherwise, the Mexican were throwing their bodies at every German attempt.

Jerome Boateng's build-up to the finals was also hampered by a groin injury, and the Bayern Munich center-back found himself exposed often as Mexico's speed was a constant threat on the counter-attack.

Die Mannschaft breezed through World Cup qualifying, winning ten out of ten, scoring 43 and conceding just four, and lifted the FIFA Confederations Cup previous year with a youthful squad, while Low recently penned a contract until 2020.
