LeBron James faces Friday deadline on whether to test free agency

James can also sign a short-term deal with Cleveland, something he has done each year since returning in 2014.

National Basketball Association superstar LeBron James decided Friday against staying with the Cleveland Cavaliers and chose instead to become an unrestricted free agent, setting up a scramble among several teams expected to vie for his services.

Houston does not have cap space, so the best way for it to acquire James would be through a trade after he picked up his player option. Houston would have to gut their roster to even make this possible and it's extremely unlikely any of the parties involved would be in favor of that.

LeBron James will opt out of his Cleveland Cavaliers contract and become an unrestricted free agent, according to reports.

The move doesn't necessarily mean James will leave the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer, but it officially opens the door for him to explore other possibilities.

Last week, OddsShark established the Lakers as the -325 favorites to sign James with the Cavaliers placing second at +325.

LeBron James reportedly plans to decline his $35.6 million player option for the 2018-19 season.

James has a home in Los Angeles, as do his chief business associates, and the allure of playing for a historic franchise like the Lakers appeals to him.
Any other suitor can offer a four-year pact worth $152 million.

There has been talk James is intrigued by the thought of going out west to play for the Lakers, if he can get another All-Star like Paul George or Kawhi Leonard to join him.

"We don't have that much experience with Joel and I and some of the younger people on our team and guys like that".

"For me, it wasn't about money", Wade said.

James also said he always felt like he would come back to Cleveland to finish his career where it began. What are the Sixers' chances of landing one of them? I'm ready to go stand in the corner like you needed Chris Bosh and Kevin Love to do over the last eight years to make this work'. Now, if he chooses a new team as a free agent, he'll make about $55 million less than that.
