Serena Williams hates being away from daughter

Williams married Alexis Ohanian, an internet entrepreneur, last fall.

But Serena was still able to extend her winning run at Wimbledon to 15 matches - a streak that encompasses her 2015 and 2016 titles. Then I spent the rest of the time with her when she woke up.

"I said "look, Mommy has to stop and Mommy has to do this". "So much has happened in the past 12 months".

Also in action on Wednesday, Croatian third seed Marin Cilic, last year's Wimbledon runner-up, plays Argentina's Guido Pella. He just secured victory over the US's Tenny Sandgren during the first round of Wimbledon matches. On the champions board, he is simply "R. Federer". It didn't start to give equal prize money to women until 2007, 123 years after they first allowed women to compete.

While the Centre Court crowd clearly appreciated the sight of Williams in full flow, they also took a shine to the plucky Tomova who battled hard to make a match of it.

Still the increasingly competitive nature of the contest was relished by Williams, who let out a roar after a cross-court backhand victor brought up another break point that Tomova saved, before applauding the 23-year-old as she survived a match point and forced her to successfully serve it out.

Apart from adjusting to her role "as a working mom", the seven-times champion also had to get used to hearing something "new" as she was addressed as "Mrs Williams" for the first time at the grasscourt major following her marriage to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian previous year. In a men's doubles first-round match India's Purav Raja and Frenchman Fabrice Martin crashed to a 2-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 9-11 loss to Bosnia's Basic Mirza and Serbia's Dusan Lajovic in 3 hours and 37-minutes.

What won't change is the preoccupation with classifying women.

However, the 23-times Grand Slam champion is considered by many - including herself - as the woman to beat at these championships.

"I´m getting there. I expect to get there, not only for Wimbledon but for the tournaments in the future". This year 20 women are listed under "Mrs.", according to a document provided by the WTA.

But with the courtesy titles at Wimbledon, the occasional unforced error is made.

Wickmayer said she did not care how she was addressed. "I was overjoyed when I saw the schedule for today", she said.

It was one of the few times Serena Williams wanted to lose. Surely not as Miss S. Williams, a name on the board seven times already.
