Comedy show Saturday Night Live, which has been enjoying high ratings due to its focus on the Trump administration, was rewarded with 21 nominations.

"The Handmaid's Tale, " the dystopian sci-fi series that claimed top drama honors last year, drew 20 bids, including one for last year's best actress victor, Elisabeth Moss, and supporting bids for Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski and Joseph Fiennes.

Netflix is the most nominated network, with 112 - breaking a 17-year streak at the top for HBO.

The streaming service's maneuvering (and not incidentally, expensive Emmy campaigning) paid off with 112 nominations - a significant increase over previous year, edging HBO's 108.

Diana Rigg's turn as Olenna Tyrell in the series has seen her nominated for Guest Actress in a Drama Series.

The mini-series that scored nominations ahead of Top of the Lake and Australia's other hope, Picnic at Hanging Rock, were: The Alienist; The Assassination of Gianni Versace; Genius: Picasso; Godless; and Patrick Melrose.

Game of Thrones garnered a whopping 22 nominations - the most for any series this year. Silicon Valley and Curb Your Enthusiasm grabbed seven and four nominations each.

The series, which will not air this year, is in contention for the Emmy for Best Drama Series along with The Crown, The Americans, The Handmaid's Tale, Stranger Things, This Is Us and Westworld.
