U.S. grand jury indicts 12 Russian spies in 2016 election hacking

Stone has emerged as a person of interest in Mueller's probe into Russian efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election, and some of Stone's associates have recently been subpoenaed in the probe.

The indictment, secured by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation of Russian involvement in the 2016 election, was issued three days before US President Donald Trump meets Russian President Vladimir Putin for a summit in Helsinki. "This is consistent with what we have been saying all along", deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters releasing a statement.

Rosenstein said the latest indictment did not include any allegation that Russian Federation was successful in their efforts to influence election outcomes.

Friday's indictments were disclosed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein at a press conference in Washington, DC.

After indictment of Russian spies, are Mueller and Rosenstein immune from dismissal?

The indictment states the conspirators searched a campaign committee computer specifically for terms including "Hillary", "Cruz", "Trump" and "Benghazi Investigations".

He said there was no evidence that the hacking changed any vote count.

Rosenstein said he briefed Trump on the latest indictment earlier this week, as the president embarked on a European tour that included the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, a visit to the United Kingdom and an upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who Trump said was not his enemy, but his "competitor".

Furthermore, the group also stands accused of creating the Guccifer 2.0 lone-hacker persona through which they tried to claim responsibility for the DNC hack, and through which they released files stolen from the organization.

President Donald Trump's highly anticipated meeting with Queen Elizabeth II was spoiled on Friday as news broke that 12 Russian officials had been indicted for allegedly hacking into the Democratic National Committee.

But Friday's indictment was the first by Mueller that directly charges Russia's government with meddling.

Nevins is not named in this indictment, but the revelation that a candidate also communicated with Russian hackers indicates yet another point of contact in a conspiracy that went beyond Trump's campaign.

Hours before the Justice Department announcement, Trump complained anew that the special counsel's investigation is complicating his efforts to forge a better working relationship with Russian Federation. I have embedded a copy of the indictment below. "No Americans are involved", he tweeted, "Time for Mueller to end this pursuit of the President and say President Trump is completely innocent". The 20 are four former Trump campaign and White House aides, three of whom have pleaded guilty to different crimes and agreed to co-operate, and 13 Russians accused of participating in a hidden but powerful social media campaign to sway USA public opinion in the 2016 election.

"The stolen data", the indictment says, "included donor records and personal identifying information for more than 2,000 Democratic donors".

We want to hear from you.
