Suspected gunman 'holding hostages' inside Los Angeles supermarket

Police were responding to a report of a shooting at the Trader Joe's near Hyperion Avenue and Silver Lake Boulevard in Silver Lake Saturday afternoon, CBS LA reports.

A suspected gunman being pursued by police has reportedly barricaded himself inside a supermarket and may have taken hostages.

BREAKING, refresh for updates: Police have surrounded a Trader Joe's market in Silver Lake after a car-theft suspect crashed the vehicle after a pursuit and fled into the market.

Los Angeles police said the incident started with a family dispute in the 1600 block of 32nd Street, where the suspect shot his grandmother and another female victim, police said.

A woman inside the store was shot but able to get out, NBC Los Angeles reported, saying there may be dozens of people still inside the store in safe locations.

The incident began when the man's auto crashed outside the store in Silver Lake after a chaotic police chase. He said it isn't clear if employees are still inside the store.

"Due to the fluidity of the incident, we will release information as it becomes available", the Los Angeles Police Department said on its Twitter feed.

The video also showed officers carrying a person who appeared to be injured, as well as people climbing out of a store window and down a rope ladder.
