Zoo accused of painting donkeys to look like zebras

Officials at an Egyptian zoo are denying allegations that two zebras on display are in fact donkeys painted with black and white stripes.

The weird creature was spotted by student Mahmoud A.Sarhani who was visiting the recently opened animal sanctuary at the International Garden municipal park.

"It came to us and the other one didn't move, but when he came near to me, I realised from the first look that it was a painted donkey, not a zebra".

Student Mahmoud Sarhan visited the attraction last week and accused the zoo of malpractice after noticing the "zebra" appeared smaller than normal with larger, pointier ears.

Zoo Director Mohamed Sultan, however, has denied accusations that the animal is a fake. "The children don't know, so they call them zebras and they are happy to see something new". "The zoo is absolutely trying to cheat us", one visitor told Chinese media.

In 2013, a zoo in China angered guests by trying to pass off a hairy dog as a lion.

Zebras and donkeys, despite both bearing a resemblance to horses, are different species.

The photos, which went viral, show the animals' stripes appear to be smudging. Or in this case, a donkey in zebra stripes.

They also pointed out that zebras have black noses, while this little guy has a much paler snout.
