McDonald's Mints MacCoin to Mark Big Mac's 50th Anniversary

Beginning at lunch time on August 2, customers can receive a MacCoin with the purchase of a Big Mac at 14,000 participating restaurants across the USA, while supplies last.

"The legendary taste of the Big Mac has helped it achieve universal recognition and a lasting legacy", said Marcia Graham, president of the Greater Philadelphia McDonald's Owner/Operator Association. They follow last year's efforts to promote the Big Mac with the larger Grand Mac and the smaller Mac Jr. and giveaways of bottles of the special sauce.

Then, from August 3 through the end of the year, diners can redeem each coin for one free Big Mac.

More than 14,000 McDonalds restaurants will be taking part in the scheme to bring customers back to the fast-food chain.

One way you can get them is to by entering the #BigMac50 contest on Twitter @McDonaldsCanada, from August 2nd until August 8th and sharing why they love the Big Mac.

From Thursday, more than 6.2 million MacCoins will be distributed globally, including 50,000 coins in New Zealand.

In total, there are five designs for the coins, each referencing one of the five decades and giving a nod to the art, music and pop culture references of that era. McDonald's added the Big Mac to its national menu in 1968 after Delligatti tested the burger in his Pittsburgh restaurants. In Canada alone, sales for the burger, over the last few years specifically, has "gone up a number of percentage points each year", says Grachnik.

"We are proud to be able to offer Kiwis 50,000 of these MacCoins from 2 August", director of marketing, McDonald's NZ Jo Mitchell said.

"The company has benefited from the ingenuity of its small business men", wrote Ray Kroc, who transformed the McDonald's into a global franchise, in his book, "Grinding It Out". It's located on Route 30 in North Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County, just off the Irwin interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
