Rescue operations under way after Indonesia's Lombok island hit by powerful quake

Salama, 52, was at a prayer class in the mosque of Karangpangsor village when the 6.9-magnitude quake struck the tropical holiday island on Sunday evening, killing more than 100 people and leaving thousands homeless as buildings collapsed.

The military said five planes carrying food, medicine, blankets, field tents and water tankers left Jakarta for the island early Wednesday.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the country's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, told reporters Monday that most of those killed and injured were on the northern side of Lombok, which sustained massive damage.

He told a news conference that there are reports of other deaths but they still need to be verified.

At Lombok's airport, dozens of tourists slept on the floor as they waited for flights off the island. "Clean drinking water is scarce due to the extremely dry weather".

The tremor was powerful enough to be felt on the neighboring island of Bali where, BNPB said, two people died. About 2,700 had left, but several thousand more tourists and hotel employees are waiting to leave, he said.

"When it happened, we stood with residents in the middle of the street and watched houses collapse around us", said Yustrianda Sirio, supervisor of a group of university students from Java doing a community service program in East Lombok.

Rescuers in Lombok were said to be still pulling people out alive from the rubble, two days after the quake.

The quake was the second in a week to hit Lombok.

Officials said that almost 8,400 tourists and resort workers had been evacuated from the three Gili islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, where two people died, emptying out a destination popular for its white beaches and turquoise waters.

Lombok had already been hit by a 6.4-magnitude quake on July 29 that killed 17 people.

The Bali and Lombok airports have stayed open.

Indonesia is defined by string of volatile volcanoes stretching for thousands of miles, as it is situated on the so-called Ring of Fire around the Pacific.
