Interim information minister departs for Vajpayee’s funeral

The flag will fly at half mast and Vajpayee will be accorded a state funeral, the government has also decided. Chief ministers, opposition leaders, chiefs of Army, Navy and Air Force, governors and a host of other dignitaries attended the funeral of Vajpayee at Rastriya Smriti Sthal, a picturesque cremation site at the heart of the capital.

Minister for Information and Law Barrister Ali Zafar will lead the Pakistani delegation that will attend the funeral of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who breathed his last in New Delhi, the Foreign Office said Friday. Innumerable, leaders of the party including Prime minister Narendra Modi, home minister Rajnath Singh, Yogi Adityanath, Devendra Fadnavis and LK Advani gathered together at the party headquarters to pay tribute to the late charismatic leader.

"The United States grieves with India on the loss of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee", the U.S. Embassy in India said in a statement Thursday.

PTI Chairman and prime minister-in-waiting Imran Khan on Thursday expressed condolences over the demise of the leader, saying his efforts for India-Pakistan peace will always be remembered. The country bid farewell to its political icon amid a light drizzle. Vajpayee, 93, died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here last evening after a prolonged illness.

Vajpayee's connection with UP, particularly Lucknow, was very strong and its people remember him fondly.Vajpayee had a soft spot for "doodh ki barfi" from a sweetmeat shop located in Old Lucknow, to the extent that after the BJP stalwart reduced his trips to Lucknow due to ill health, then veteran party leader from Uttar Pradesh Lalji Tandon took the candies to him.

Amid sultry weather conditions, thousands of people walked along the over seven km-long route with some showering petals at the carriage. Heavy security was deployed along the route.
