Beijing's current air quality ranking is 62 as it enjoys some of its clearest skies in years after a government drive to cut back on coal burning. Smoke has again pushed air quality over the Puget Sound region to dangerously unhealthy levels and officials are recommending people do what they can to stay indoors. "Local smoke levels may vary based on wind direction and fire characteristics but, until a significant change in the provincial weather pattern occurs, widespread air quality improvements are not expected".

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday things had improved a bit.

Unhealthy air-quality will be common at times thanks to the large wildfires now burning across the region. Gusty winds and low humidity prompted the National Weather Service to issue a red flag warning for parts of Western Washington until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The poor air quality can be especially unsafe for people with preexisting heart conditions.

Benenati says orange is unhealthy for sensitive groups like children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with respiratory conditions, red is unhealthy and that is unhealthy for everyone.
