Gerard Depardieu faces rape investigation, denies wrongdoing

Depardieu has had a prolific acting career, including over 170 film titles.

Gerard Depardieu, 69, one of France's most iconic movie stars, has been accused of allegedly raping and sexually assaulting a 22-year-old actress in Paris earlier in the month of August, according to the Daily Mail.

He denies the allegations "absolutely", his lawyer told AFP news agency.

The unnamed actress is accusing Depardieu of having assaulted and raped her at his Paris home on two occasions, on August 6 and August 13.

The unnamed actress made her statement to police in Lambesc, southern France, after which the case was passed to prosecutors in the capital. "He will cooperate in the investigation and will answer questions", Herve Temime said.

The actress was "devastated" by the alleged attacks, her agent was quoted as saying by French digital news service BFMTV.

Depardieu's lawyer, Hervé Témime, told BFM that his client strongly denied the allegations.

Temime added that Depardieu is "shaken" by the allegations, which are against "everything he is and respects".

The young woman was studying at a school where Depardieu is teaching, according to BFM.

Women are "sufficiently aware that the sexual urge is by its nature wild and aggressive".

Depardieu has appeared in 200 films over six decades and holds a rare position as a French actor who is known in Hollywood. His other films include The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), 1900 (1976), The Last Metro (1980), Danton (1983) and 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992).
