Dominica prepares for passage of Hurricane Isaac

A northwestward motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected for Hurricane Helene through late Tuesday.

The center of Hurricane Helene was located near latitude 16.0 North, longitude 33.6 West. Helene is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 miles per hour (22 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue with a decrease in forward speed through tonight. The rapidly intensifying storm could strike a direct and risky blow anywhere from the Carolinas to the Mid-Atlantic region later this week, possibly as a fearsome category 4.

U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration was harshly criticized as being slow to respond to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, cancelled a political rally planned for Friday in Jackson, Mississippi, over safety concerns related to Florence, his campaign said. Its center will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said.

WILMINGTON - Hurricane Florence has strengthened into a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 115 miles per hour, according to the 11 a.m. update from the National Hurricane Center. Isaac has become the fifth hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season.
