Tiger Woods Wins First PGA Tournament in 5 Years

One year ago, Woods was still waiting for his lower back to fuse and wasn't sure he could ever play again.

ATLANTA, GA - SEPTEMBER 23: Tiger Woods of the United States poses with the trophy after winning the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club on September 23, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia.

After Woods' win, the crowd at East Lake erupted in euphoria.

'I just loved it out there, the fight and the grind but I was trying hard not to cry at one point, ' he said.

'I hadn't won any tournaments which they can remember, so I think this will be a little bit different for them. Once I got the ball on the green, it was done.

A birdie from Justin Rose prevented Woods winning the overall FedEx Cup title as well, with Rose going home with the £7.6m bonus.

"I was beyond playing".

'Now this is going to be one long flight overseas that I am going to enjoy, ' said Woods, before making his way to the airport. Off the course, he had to overcome the embarrassment of a DUI arrest early on Memorial Day 2017 when he was found asleep at the wheel of his auto, later found to have a concoction of pain medication in his system.

In March, Woods played a meaningful Sunday round when he finished tied for second at the Valspar Championship.

"Pops would be very proud of the way I went out today", he said. I've had a not-so-easy last couple of years. It was really special to see them at the green on 18.

The former world No.1 played his final round alongside Rory McIlroy, whose own hopes of victory dissipated after he carded a disappointing 74, but was full of admiration for his one-time golfing idol.

In under a year, Woods has clawed his way from outside of the top 1,000 golfers in the world to 21st and just improved on that number to move to 13th with his Tour Championship win. It was his first PGA win since 2013.

Woods' victory at the Tour Championship was his only title of the 2017-18 season and his first since the 2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Woods marched up the 72nd hole with rock concert scenes unfolding behind him as thousands of fans ignored security and police officers to walk the fairway and soak up the occasion.

"I've got a three-shot lead". The victor of the 2019 Tour Championship will automatically win the FedEx Cup.

The 42-year-old, who had five prescription drugs in his system, later pleaded guilty to reckless driving, underwent a diversion programme and spent 11 months on probation, returning to competitive golf at the end of November by admitting he was "winging it" as he waited to see if his fused back would hold up.

"The up and down at 17 was huge", added Woods, who was flying to Paris later Sunday with the United States team for week's Ryder Cup.
