Bill Cosby sentenced for up to 10 years for sexual assault

Camille went on to claim that on September 12, an online publication reported that a Montgomery County Court official, requesting anonymity, said "the original recording" by Gianna was "doctored and contained information that would exonerate Mr. Cosby".

She told the jurors she felt powerless as Cosby groped her breasts, penetrated her with his fingers and masturbated himself with her hand. "The time has come".

As per local media reports, after hearing the sentence, comedian Bill Cosby showed no reaction.

Cosby was also fined $25,000 and the cost of prosecution.

Cosby faces up to 10 years on each of three counts of aggravated indecent assault, although it is unlikely Montgomery County Court Judge Steven O'Neill would go as high as 30 years, according to Steven Chanenson, a law professor at Villanova University in the US. The defense wanted Cosby sent home on house arrest.

O'Neill also declared Cosby to be a "sexually violent predator", which will require him to register with Philadelphia state police, and submit to counselling and notification as a sex offender for life. It does not impact the length of the actual sentence.

She is one of about 60 women who have accused Cosby of drugging and violating them over the past 50 years. However, most of those cases occurred outside the statute of limitations.

Bill Cosby was accused of molesting a basketball administrator Andrea Constand of the Temple University more than a decade ago.

"No one is above the law, and no one should be treated differently or disproportionally", Judge O'Neill said.

Prosecutors have argued that the nature of Cosby's crime as well as his alleged history of misconduct warrant a lengthy prison term.

She summed up the effect: "Bill Cosby took my lovely, healthy young spirit and crushed it".

Judge O'Neill cited Constand's statement in deciding on the sentence. "The victims cannot be unraped, all we can do is hold the perpetrators responsible".

Women's rights activist and attorney Gloria Allred lauded the sentencing of Bill Cosby, saying it "has been a long journey to justice for all of the accusers".

Bill Cosby doesn't plan to make a statement in court before he's sentenced for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman.

Five other accusers took the stand at the trial as part of an effort by prosecutors to portray him as a predator.

Cosby arrived Monday with his spokespeople, Andrew Wyatt and Ebonee Benson. But as CNN notes, the judge didn't have to stick to the guidelines.

"Gianna Constand, the mother of Andrea Constand, had surreptitiously and illegally made the recording of Mr. Cosby in 2005 without his knowledge or consent", the statement continued. "Mr. Steele relied heavily on the recording in both trials, ultimately convincing the jury in the second trial to return a guilty verdict".

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said the 81-year-old used his fame and fortune to "hide his true self and hide his crimes", intimidating his victims into keeping them silent for decades. "The jury thinks otherwise". While the defence asked their client to remain under house arrest pending an appeal, the judge ordered him to be remanded into custody.
