Russia holds Israel responsible for the incident, saying the regime's warplanes "created a unsafe situation" that led to the downing of the Russian aircraft by Syria's S-200 missile defense system. Fifteen Russian crew members were killed in the incident, for which Israel denies responsibility.
According to Shoigu, an Israeli F-16 jet used the Russian Il-20 aircraft as a shield, which resulted in the downing of the plane by Syrian air defense systems and the killing of 15 Russian servicemen.
Israel, by contrast, said that its air force hadn't violated any agreements with Russian Federation and that Israeli jets had already returned to Israeli airspace when the missiles were launched. "Now the situation has changed, and we are not to blame", Shoigu said Monday.
After the accident, the Russians accused Israel of failing to give Russia adequate notice of its airstrike in Syria.
Russian officials did not, however, signal a desire to fundamentally alter the relationship with Israel - a key element of the Kremlin's push to build its influence in the Middle East.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters the decision to supply the weapons was not directed at any third country. "Everything had worked right up until the tragedy that occurred recently". Earlier in the war, Russian Federation suspended a supply of S-300, which Israel feared Syria could use against it.
Russia's decision to provide Syria with advanced S-300 air defense systems is a "major mistake", U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton has warned, advising Russian Federation against escalating the already high tensions in the Middle East region.
Konashenkov stressed that the radar images "clearly showed the direction of the flight of the S-200 missile launched by the Syrian air defense system, as well as the locations of the Russian and Israeli aircraft". It already exists in Syria since Moscow deployed it-and its more advanced version, the S-400-to protect Russia's own bases and port.
For its part, Israel is wary of Iran's growing influence in Syria, which is bringing its archenemy closer to its borders. "The party responsible for the attacks in Syria and Lebanon and really the party responsible for the shooting down of the Russian plane is Iran", he said.
The Kan national broadcaster, meanwhile, claimed Cohen would join Netanyahu in NY and discuss Iran's involvement in the Middle East with a number of officials from other countries on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Russian Federation and Israel have been getting along surprisingly well considering that they are on opposite sides of the Syrian civil war.
"Israel is actively working to prevent Syria from possessing missile capabilities and it is aware that if the Syrian army possesses these capabilities, it would serve to put a stop to that arrogance", he told his supporters. "This high-precision campaign it has been carrying out will become more hard".
