Emery 'very happy' with Welbeck after match-winning brace for Arsenal

Welbeck scored twice in Arsenal's 3-1 Carabao Cup third-round win over Brentford on Wednesday night, with Emery suggesting afterwards he is doing plenty to improve his chances of earning a first Premier League start of the campaign.

Welbeck who will be out of contract next summer, is yet to start a league game this season, but now has four goals to his name for Arsenal.

A fine Alan Judge free-kick halved the arrears but, despite Brentford outplaying their hosts for much of the second half, substitute Alexandre Lacazette wrapped up the win in stoppage time. "He gives us his quality and commitment every day", the Arsenal boss told his post-match press conference.

"I want to look at him also with our best performance and for him to stay in first XI".

He added: "For Saturday [against Watford] he is another player I can try to help in the first XI". I said to the players at half-time, "We can either sit behind the ball and let Arsenal have it and take 2-0, or go and ask a question".

Meanwhile, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi are also expected to drop out in favour of Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey - although the Welshman is a doubt after contract talks broke down this week.

He continued: "There are three things when we are speaking about an individual". I know they are in the a year ago of their contract with the team, and they are working and speaking with the club.

Each match is very important for the players, they can show us and show every supporter and every person their performance.
