Kamala Harris leads walkout on Senate committee vote on Kavanaugh

A devoted prosecutor, a formidable trial attorney and a mentor to many - those are some of the ways Rachel Mitchell's colleagues describe her. Mitchell has spent more than two decades with Maricopa County Attorney's Office, one of the country's largest public prosecutorial agencies serving more than 4 million people.

Mitchell said she had been drawn to prosecuting sex crimes after a stint working as a law clerk for an attorney on a case involving a youth choir director.

Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 6, 2018, on the third day of his Supreme Court confirmation hearing in Washington, D.C. Christine Blasey Ford's allegation that Kavanaugh drunkenly assaulted her when they were teenagers has raised a political storm in the #MeToo era and the GOP's all-male presence on the panel made some want a woman to question Ford.

"I think if you are a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, you ought to be able to question Dr. Ford yourself and not either hide behind or outsource that to a hired outside counsel", said Sen. One deals with family violence, while the other deals with sex crimes-and the latter was where Mitchell worked for 12 years. He was sentenced to 111 years in prison.

Here's what we know about her.

Ford 's emotionally-charged testimony concluded with her recounting details of her alleged assault and providing lawmakers insight into why she chose to come forward.

On Fox News, legal analyst Andrew Napolitano, a Trump ally, echoed some of that sentiment about Mitchell, saying that Ford "is extremely credible and Rachel Mitchell is not laying a glove on her". In fact, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department and the Maricopa County Attorney's Office are two separate agencies.

"I just wanted to tell you that the first thing that struck me from your statement this morning is that you're terrified", she said.

Read on for a look at Mitchell's long career and where she stands politically. Mitchell discussed her job in a 2012 interview with FrontLine Magazine, the journal of Foundations Baptist Fellowship International, a fundamentalist group that cautioned in a blog post this week that some women fabricate allegations of sexual assault.

STONE: Ortiz says Mitchell gravitated toward prosecuting sex crimes because she knew it was important and hard.

"Rachel is a respected prosecutor who is very good at what she does", Romley, Mitchell's former boss, said.

The county attorney's office introduced a sex crimes protocol past year - the first in its history.

He called her "victim centered", but not so much so that she loses objectivity. But in the Senate hearing room, Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley cut in to say her time was up and it was now the Democrats' turn to ask questions.

Bush has been advocating for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh with wavering senators in recent days.

Mitchell is a registered Republican who has lectured across the USA about sexual assault investigations. LeBrun's prosecution resulted from an investigation into child sexual abuse allegations against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix, and Mitchell was assigned the LeBrun case in 2005.

ROMLEY: Undoubtedly, there are some Republicans that are going to say go for the jugular.
