Roger Federer admitted that he was lacking "punch" after he was turfed out of the Shanghai Masters semi-finals on Saturday by 13th-seeded Borna Coric.
The Serb grabbed the opening set with a hold to love, having dropped just four points on his serve overall.
Earlier in the day, three-times Shanghai champion Novak Djokovic extended his winning streak to 16 matches after beating South African Kevin Anderson 7-6 (1) 6-3, edging the Serb closer to the world number two ranking.
Celebrating his 1,000 match in style, the 14-time Grand Slam victor was clinical as he lined up a potential title showdown on Sunday with reigning champion Roger Federer.
Djokovic will be up a place to second in the world - overtaking 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer - when the rankings are released on Monday.
Djokovic, who has won the last two Grand Slams, at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, is now world number three, but could move up a spot if he books a place in Sunday's final. He went up a break at the start of the second set, but then trailed 4-1 in the tiebreaker.
Djokovic through the first half of the year didn't reach a semifinal until Rome in May, and lost first round in Indian Wells and Miami, and prior to the quarterfinals at Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid.
This is one of the best tournaments, everything has been great, the fans, the food, I even managed to put on some weight here.
"I think, quite similar in style of play to today's match".
"This was definitely one of the best serving weeks that I have had".
The fourth seed, who is yet to win a Grand Slam despite his undoubted talent, angrily threw his racquet at the start of the second set as Djokovic ramped up the pressure.
Zverev, who improved to 4-0 against Edmund, saved the one break point he faced and took advantage of the two break points he earned.
