'Diablo 2' Producer Says Blizzard Is "Not Understanding Gamers Anymore"

The general sentiment coming out of BlizzCon surrounding Diablo Immortal was negative, and this theoretically presents an optics problem and it likely explains why investors might have been spooked. Although that ended up being misinterpreted by fans anyway, so Blizzard may not find any peace now until Diablo 4 is properly announced. According to a Kotaku report, however, the reaction to Diablo Immortal's announcement could've been very different, as the site says that Blizzard planned to confirm Diablo 4 is in development but bailed on the reveal before last Friday.

If Blizzard had shared a teaser for Diablo 4 at BlizzCon, even a wafer-thin one like a GIF of a flaming "4", Diablo Immortal's reception may have been more positive. According to sources who spoke to Kotaku, Blizzard had meant to tease Diablo IV, which is indeed in development, but decided at the last minute they weren't yet ready to commit. Initially, Kotaku reported that this was meant to be the closer for BlizzCon 2018's presentation, but this has been disputed by Blizzard.

But for reasons unknown, the plan changed a couple of weeks prior to BlizzCon, and the Diablo 4 reveal was scrapped. The evidence has accumulated since 2016, four years after Diablo III's release on PC, and Blizzard danced around a confirmation by telling us several new Diablo projects are in the works-including the one fans "really want".

"Some of them are going to take longer than others, but we may have some things to show you later this year", Camel said. Blizzard is working with NetEase on the development of the game, and NetEase is known for free-to-play games.

With no word on a fourth proper Diablo entry, Diablo Immortal felt like a betrayal of the franchise to some and a cheap consolation prize to others. While another called it an "absolute slap in the face of all the fans who stuck with blizzard through the mess that was diablo 3, hoping that we'd finally get a good diablo game". One of them is the game that fans are waiting for, and it was almost announced last week.
