Schumer: Dems set to push Mueller shield bill over Whitaker

In an op-ed in August past year he publicly urged Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - who oversees the probe - to "limit the scope of his investigation to the four corners of the order appointing him special counsel".

Schiff's tough warning came as Senate minority leader Charles Schumer, House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, and other Democratic leaders called on Whitaker to recuse himself from the Mueller probe, which he now oversees following Trump's move last week.

The myriad questions surrounding Whitaker's independence prompted Department of Justice veterans and constitutional law experts to argue that Mueller has grounds to challenge Whitaker's appointment if he overrules a decision by Mueller. Whitaker has been critical of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe, including advocating defunding or limiting the investigation.

Whitaker said in a statement on Wednesday that he is "committed to leading a fair Department with the highest ethical standards, that upholds the rule of law, and seeks justice for all Americans".

"Well, the very first thing, obviously, is to protect the Mueller investigation". "He's said repeatedly it's going to be allowed to finish".

"We all knew something like this would happen after the election since Trump is counting on the control he has in Congress until January", said resident Bob Miller.

While some speculated the "46" in his Twitter handle MattWhitaker46 referred to a future run at president-Trump is the 45th USA president-it ostensibly refers to his jersey number, 46, when he played with the Iowa Hawkeyes football team from 1989 to 1982.

USA progressive groups will stage hundreds of protests nationwide on Thursday to demand that President Donald Trump do nothing to hinder an ongoing investigation into Russian meddling to help him win the 2016 US election.

The New York Daily News reports that among them are Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Activists are demanding that Whitaker recuse himself from managing the investigation as well, saying he has his conflicts of interest. The president also said, "I don't know Matt Whitaker", even though he has met with him more than a dozen times.

Republicans lost the House of Representatives but strengthened their hold on the Senate Tuesday, giving Trump the votes he needs to confirm a successor.

"I really did my best Mr. Trump", Sessions admits.

The incoming House Intelligence Committee chairman is warning new acting attorney general Matt Whitaker any role he plays with the Mueller probe 'will be exposed'.

Trump told reporters Friday "I don't know Matt Whitaker" and said he didn't speak with Whitaker about special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

There have been plenty of Democrats who have called for Whitaker to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation, as Sessions did.

In Mr Whitaker, Mr Trump has found a man who echoes the president's attacks on Mr Mueller.

He also shared an article with the headline "Note to Trump's lawyer: Do not co-operate with Mueller lynch mob" on Twitter, adding himself that it was "worth a read". And Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she was concerned by some of Whitaker's past comments and called for legislation that would place limits on his ability to fire Mueller.

CNN reported that Mr Mueller's team has begun writing its final report and there are signs the special counsel's team are looking into Roger Stone, a political consultant and ally of Mr Trump.
