Redskins signing Sanchez to back up McCoy

With Sanchez now the backup quarterback in Washington, it means the Redskins will be heading into Dallas with two quarterbacks who have started a combined ZERO games over the past two and a half seasons. Redskins offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh spent four seasons as Sanchez's QB coach in NY (2009-12).

Sanchez remained unsigned since serving as Mitchell Trubisky's backup with the Chicago Bears last season.

"We had a workout today; looked pretty good", Gruden said.

Sanchez, the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft, offers the Redskins veteran experience.

McCoy threw for a touchdown Sunday in his first pass in a regular-season game since 2015. The 32 year-old is 37-35 as a starter and has 86 touchdowns and 86 interceptions in his career.

Sanchez and Clemens know offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh from their time with the New York Jets. One of those turnovers became known as the "Butt Fumble", a play in which Sanchez lost the ball when he slammed into a lineman's backside.

The injury was eerily similar to the one Joe Theisman experienced 33 years ago when Lawrence Taylor sacked the former Redskins QB. An injury cost him the entire 2013 season, and the Jets cut him prior to the 2014 season. Gruden says surgery went well, he didn't believe there was any ligament damage and hopes Smith can make a full recovery in six to eight months.
