"I am excited that Neal Brown and his family have chose to call West Virginia University their next home", said athletic director Shane Lyons. Details of the contract is still being worked out, but it appears the former University of Kentucky assistant will receive a six-year deal. Going back to his time as an offensive coordinator at Troy, Texas Tech and Kentucky Brown has guided good offenses, including a Troy offense that was almost top-50 in the country in scoring offense this year (30.7 points per game; 51st) and finished top-60 in FBS in rushing output (58th).
Brown was the head coach at Troy for four seasons, amassing a 35-16 record and winning a Sun Belt Conference title and three bowl games.
According to a Yahoo report, West Virginia interviewed Brown twice this week, and school officials were impressed by his "charm and charisma". The Trojans went 10-3 this season, ending with a 43-32 win over Buffalo in the Dollar General Bowl. In Morgantown, Brown will inherit a team that went 8-4 this season, but loses a lot of key contributors, including quarterback Will Grier and leading receiver David Sills.
In 2018, Brown's Trojans upset a down-year Nebraska team, 24-19. In 2017, Troy went to No. 25 LSU and won 24-21, manhandling the Tigers physically.
