Juventus 1-0 AC Milan: Cristiano Ronaldo header wins Supercoppa for Juve

In recent year the Italian Super Cup - traditionally the annual match between Italy's Serie A winners and Coppa Italia champions - has been overseas in China, Libya, the United States and Qatar.

The match was played out to a sold-out King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah in front of more than 61,000 fans.

The former Real Madrid man rose to the occasion as expected and headed home the Bianconeri's only goal on the night to help the Italian giants claim their first bit of silverware for the season.

The Italian version of the Super Cup marks the first medal for Ronaldo as a Juventus player since his club-record switch and his 29th overall for club and country.

"It was my intention to start 2019 with a trophy, I have my first title with Juve and I am very happy". But it is only the start, we will take it one step at a time.

Blaise Matuidi had a goal for Juventus disallowed for offside while Ronaldo saw an acrobatic effort bounce narrowly over the crossbar in an even first half which also saw Juve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny pull off a good save to deny Hakan Calhanoglu. I want to be honest, I didn't even want to talk about Higuain, as we're here for the Supercoppa.

The game in Jeddah could also be a farewell one for AC Milan forward Gonzalo Higuain, who will be looking for revenge against his parent club Juventus ahead of a touted move to Chelsea.

Milan nearly took the lead immediately after halftime but Patrick Cutrone's effort came off the crossbar.

Milan's work to get back in the game was made harder when Ivorian midfielder Franck Kessie was sent off ten minutes after Ronaldo's header, and ultimately the Rossoneri couldn't find a way back in.

But on the hour Ronaldo struck, ghosting beyond the Milan backline and glancing Miralem Pjanic's ball over the top past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
