Cooper impressed everyone with his directorial debut, which racked up eight nominations, including Best Picture.
With one big exception, which Duana will be posting about later, this morning's Oscar nominations are nearly entirely acceptable. Rounding out the nominees is Adam McKay for the undercooked Vice, a tough pill to swallow knowing critical favourites Debra Granik (Leave No Trace), Tamara Jenkins (Private Life), Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here) and Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) were all left out, the first three having earned directing nominations at this year's Independent Spirit Awards. Roma also leads in the total number of nominations alongside The Favourite with ten nominations.
In all, there are eight films vying for best picture: Roma, The Favourite, A Star Is Born, Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman, Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, satirical Dick Cheney biopic Vice, civil rights dramedy Green Book and Black Panther. "Their raised profile and heightened desirability make them "must see" films for fans who want to keep up with the Oscar race". And Won't You Be My Neighbor? and Three Identical Strangers didn't get nominated in the Best Documentary category (although I heard some compelling arguments against Strangers and its structure from documentarians so I'm not terribly surprised by that one). And Roma also landed both actress nominations, with breakthrough performer Yalitza Aparicio getting a Best Actress nomination and Marina de Tavira scoring in Best Supporting Actress. She's also Marvel's first-ever female production designer. To recap briefly, A Star Is Born was the year's first major frontrunner, scoring rave reviews and big box office when it hit theaters last fall.
Though many expected "A Star Is Born", Bradley Cooper's tear-inducing revival of one of Hollywood's most oft-remade show-business myths, to top the nominations, Cooper was surprisingly overlooked as director and the academy instead put its fullest support behind a pair of indies by worldwide directors.
The singer also picked up another nod for best original song for Shallow, along with co-writers Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. Last year, Mary J. Blige was the first to receive the dual nomination for her work on the Netflix film "Mudbound".
Kidman, an early Oscar favourite, was passed over for her lead turn in Destroyer as well as her supporting role in Boy Erased. The overall record in the category belongs to Edith Head with 35 nominations, according to the film academy.
