Harris's experience as San Francisco district attorney and California attorney-general helps her stand out from the crowd, with the senator making her slogan "For the People" in reference to her time rising in court to say, "Kamala Harris, for the people".
"It's a flawed system". Harris was asked, "You're an African-American woman, but you are also Indian American".
"I will also say to you that I have seen fathers bring their sons up to me and say, 'she is the first, ' in a way that is to also speak to those sons about the fact they should not ever be burdened by what has been and they should see what can be", Harris said.
Fatal shootings by police of unarmed black men have become a rallying point among a swath of Democratic-leaning voters.
But Democrats, honing in on President Trump's personal unpopolarity, apparently mistake the public rejection of Trump's personal foibles for public warmth toward full-scale Leftism.
She was passionate and definitive when she answered a question from a recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, commonly called "Dreamers", who told Harris that she didn't want to be used as a bargaining chip in the negotiations over a border wall. She pointed to the 2012 shooting rampage at a CT school that left 26 people - mostly children - dead and said members of Congress should have been forced into a room to view the autopsy photos and then been asked to "vote your conscience".
Harris' campaign is expected to highlight her career as a prosecutor as part of her rationale for seeking the presidency.
Harris also did not shy away from taking on Trump directly, saying the US welcomes refugees and calling the wall that Trump wants to build at the southern border a "medieval vanity project" that would not actually stop transnational gangs, which she noted she battled as state attorney general.
Complicating the launch, billionaire former Starbucks chief executive Howard Schultz said hours after her announcement that he is seriously considering entering the race - as an independent. These polls do not mean that Trump will lose the 2020 election. That contrasts with the approach of other declared Democratic candidates, including Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA, who held roughly half a dozen events over three days during her first visit after announcing a likely presidential bid.
"Seems like free advertising for me", Morgan said a year ago of the Democrats' use of the slogan.
Harris, 54, and Schultz, 65, join several candidate already in the race, including Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, New York's Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, House Democrat Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii and Obama-era housing secretary Julian Castro of Texas.
Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Bernie Sanders of Vermont may also run.
Her platform will include progressive policies including debt-free college and "Medicare for all" - allowing Americans to opt into government-run health coverage.
Harris succinctly responded with, "How do I describe myself?" 'Cause she's the only one in the news right now. Lord knows, I am not flawless. She certainly looks tough enough so far.
