Trump breaks silence on Jussie Smollett attack

ET confirmed on Tuesday that Smollett was hospitalized in Chicago after an attack in the early hours of the morning.

"We want to be clear, this was a racial and homophobic hate crime", the statement from Smollett's family reads.

News of the assault on "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett swept through social media as a viral storm. "With love & gratitude, The Smollett Family". The rope was still around Smollett's neck when police spoke to him, officials said. However, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi noted there are gaps and none of the footage police have reviewed shows the alleged attack.

Surveillance footage released by police Wednesday shows two "people of interest" investigators are now asking the public for help in identifying.

Smollett was the target of a hate crime earlier this week, which reportedly left him beaten while a noose was hung around his neck. "Oftentimes ending fatally, these are inhumane acts of domestic terrorism and they should be treated as such".

After expressing their warning that attacks like this will continue to happen until Americans start to hold each other accountable, the family went on to say that it starts with hateful words.

Chicago has one of the nation's most sophisticated and extensive video surveillance systems, including thousands of cameras on street poles, skyscrapers, buses and in train tunnels.

Guglielmi said because of the financial relationship between the two men, they are trying to verify the call took place and have requested phone records or the physical phones used for the call.

Donald Trump expressed sympathy for Smollett on Thursday. In the video, Smollett walks out of frame for about a minute and reappears on another camera "wearing a rope like a neck tie", police said.

Smollett's parents, Janet and Joel Sr., met in the San Francisco Bay area as they worked on civil rights causes. The FBI has declined to comment on the investigation.

The envelope featured the acronym 'MAGA, ' which stands for the pro-Trump slogan "Make America Great Again".

In photos of the purported letter - which were obtained by GrapeJuice.net and TMZ - the words "you will die black f-" are spelled out in magazine letter cut-outs.

"Detectives are seeking to identify and interview the two subject (s) depicted in the pictures above, walking on New St. near IL, between 1:30 a.m.to 1:45 a.m.in order to determine whether they may have any involvement in the reported incident, or if they may have witnessed the incident". "If and when this occurred, we will find some kind of digital evidence of it".

20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment released a statement Tuesday: "We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our EMPIRE family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night".
