Ander Herrera believes United can stage a comeback against PSG

It was United's first defeat under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and their heaviest home loss in Europe.

It is painfully ironic that the very tactic of counterattacking which was linked to be the home-side's go-to measure turned out to be their bane.

Despite the incredible pass from Di Maria, Mbappe simply stole the show on the goal.

"We know there's a quality player there".

That impressive surge was brought to a shuddering halt by the Ligue 1 title holders as Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe netted for a PSG side that was without Neymar and Edinson Cavani.

The Red and Blues doubled their lead just seven minutes later when Di Maria played in Kylian Mbappe who slotted the ball past David de Gea to seal the 2-0 victory in the first leg of the round of 16 tie.

Arsene Wenger has criticised Manchester United's performance against PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday night and says they were completely blown away in midfield. "It was not easy with injuries [Neymar, Edinson Cavani] but we have great players, a great team, the match is flawless tonight".

'This won't be a season-defining experience for us.

Failures in those two games could effectively undo much of the progress and hype that Solskjaer's unprecedented run had carved out at United.

From what we have just seen in the first leg, it is extremely hard to make a case for United turning the tie around in Paris on 6 March.

It was a dispiriting evening for Solskjaer, who had sparked such enthusiasm among United's players and fans since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho in December.

Solskjaer might have that tactical acumen in his locker, but it was not on show on a chastening night for the man in the home dugout. The top four is one thing but we want to be at the top and Manchester United should be at the top.

"I can't do anything about Alexis Sanchez", said Solskjaer.

'In the Champions League it is an important thing that you can not be dominated in midfield and the whole evening Man United were dominated in midfield, ' Wenger explained on beIN SPORTS after the game.

"And we are looking to strengthen the squad and then again we have so many young players to take a step up for next season". This was the first time that Solskjaer's credentials have taken a jolt and that the reality check came in the Champions League is not good news for him.

"At this club we bounce back".

Rashford's sharp turn brought a foul that saw Kimpembe booked before United again threatened when fine play from Pogba ended with a low cross that Buffon held well.
