Huawei launches $3655 foldable 5G phone the Mate X to rival Samsung

Huawei just announced its first foldable phone Mate X at MWC 2019.

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd last week unveiled its own folding smartphone, priced at almost $2,000, in a bid to top the technology of Apple Inc and Chinese rivals and reignite consumer interest amid slumping sales.

Huawei is touting its uncompromised experience with this device, since there's no notch and cutout on the display. When folded, the screen gets two separate areas, including a 6.6-inch main display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 2480 x 1148 resolution, and a secondary 6.38-inch screen with a 25:9 aspect ratio and 2480 x 892 resolution.

"The Mate X also boasts a 4500 mAh battery with "Supercharge" support, charging the device from 0% to 85% in just 30 minutes, catering to today's media-heavy users". As expected this phone uses a single screen approach which folds outwards, giving you a screen on the front and rear.

Samsung, meanwhile, said that the new phones and wearable devices like the Bluetooth-connected Galaxy Buds that fit into a person's ears will be shown on electronic billboards in New York, Paris, Milan, Madrid and Moscow.

The Mate X might be the most promising foldable phone we've seen yet, but that's really not saying much.

Huawei is pulling out all the stops in other areas, too. Nearly everyone with a smartphone has heard of Apple and Samsung, the top device makers, and Google, the power behind Android's pervasive software.

It's getting close. Samsung was the No. 1 smartphone seller for all of a year ago, followed by Apple, according to research firm International Data Corp.

With fast 5G connectivity, Huawei says consumers will be able to download a 1GB movie in 3 seconds.

In the weeks that preceded MWC 2019, Huawei teased that it would unveil a foldable phone at the show.

Those blistering speeds come as the result of Huawei having expertise making both cellular modems for mobile devices, and the networking equipment those cell networks run on.

The cloud over Huawei also includes US criminal charges filed last month against the company and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, who USA prosecutors want to extradite from Canada.

Other features are an in screen fingerprint reader, three cameras, wireless charging for itself and other devices. This gives Samsung more time to market their upcoming products.

As for the U.S., Huawei can only make so much headway as long as the government is casting the company as a cyber-villain, said Gartner analyst Tuong Nguyen. "The barriers in the USA are just getting more hard". This foldable phone is thinner, has a bigger screen and also folds flatter than Samsung Galaxy Fold.

The Mate X is promised around the middle of this year.
