He has been training with world-renowned wrestler Ben Askren to sharpen up his already strong ground game.
Smith remains one of the toughest fighters on the UFC roster. He's been very vocal about Dana White and how Dana didn't want Ben in the UFC in previous years.
"I think that every matchup is different", Smith said. Knowing the reason I was in Atlanta was probably for Super Bowl.
And then the UFC finally called a year ago.
Stylistically, Lawler poses exactly the kind of problems that fans have wondered for years if Askren could deal with.
And if these two fantastic fights weren't enough for your viewing pleasure, UFC 235 also features the fierce former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler (28-12) take on Woodley training partner and wrestling prodigy Ben Askren (18-0) in Askren's highly anticipated UFC debut. Following his victory over Aoki, Askren declared that he was done competing and that he wanted to retire before he stayed too long and saw a steep decline in his abilities.
UFC 235 is coming our way tonight from Las Vegas, Nevada. What isn't up for debate, however, is how much Askren (19-0, 1 NC) was forced to endure in a wild and entertaining entrance to the Octagon. "And I know everyone always has a chance", he said.
"He did recognise me for doing that so he was happy about that", he added. He took Woodley down in the opening round and, after Woodley managed to work back to his feet, peppered him with knees and punches in the clinch. Lesnar was an NCAA D-I champion and he joined UFC after just one MMA fight.
With the win, Usman becomes the first UFC champion from Africa.
Smith has rattled off 14 victories across his past 16 appearances, a run of sustained success that includes his current three-fight winning streak.
As a former Bellator champion who holds dominant wins over top-tier fighters such as Douglas Lima and Andrey Koreshkov and a former ONE FC champion, he has never once tasted defeat inside the cage.
Woodley comes into UFC 235 having won six of his last seven fights, with a draw against Stephen Thompson the only blemish on his record since 2014. Many people may think Askren is a boring fighter. He had retired from ONE FC and never gave an inkling of a return for most of previous year. Askren's rights were acquired by the UFC in a trade with ONE in exchange for Demetrious Johnson. At the same time, Cormier vacating the 205lbs crown suggests he has no plans on going back down in weight in the final stretch of an incredible professional MMA career. Let me know what you think about them! Askren still hasn't talked to White at any length since the move.
"I want to f-- that guy up so bad". "Maybe he doesn't feel like he needs to, and that's fine".
