A Top Leader Of Gambino Crime Family Is Slain In New York

Investigators haven't made any arrests in the hours that have passed but insists the case remains an open book until they publicly state otherwise.

Cali, 53, was shot several times in the Todt Hill area of Staten Island on the night of March 13 before he was rushed to a hospital, where he died.

Witnesses said they heard six or seven shots.

Police were seen taking a late-model silver Cadillac Escalade SUV away from the scene on a covered, flatbed truck around noon Thursday.

Suspected Gambino crime boss Frank Cali was fatally shot outside his home in NY on Wednesday.

Following his death, notorious mobster John Gotti was named the new head of the crime family until 1992 when he was found guilty on multiple charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, bribery and tax evasion.

NY media reported that 53-year-old Cali was shot multiple times outside his auto on Staten Island on Wednesday evening, local time, by an unidentified man who then fled the scene in a blue vehicle. Gotti died in prison in 2002.

The post-Gotti chapter saw the mob's influence on the United States eastern seaboard wane - but Wednesday's hit threw NY back to its golden years of organized crime.

Paul Castellano, the Gambino family head at that time, was shot in the street on Manhattan's East Side. "The word that I'm hearing is this: That there's old school tension and friction".

"Frank Cali was a pretty likeable guy, and also this is not a way the mob would kill one of their own", he said.

The murder reminded Mob fans of the last NY "hit" on a Mafia boss, almost 40 years ago.

Last October, Bonanno crime family associate Sylvester Zottola, 71, was gunned down at a Bronx McDonald's drive-thru as he waited for a coffee. As prosecutors tried and failed to bring him down, he came to be called the Teflon Don. He was sentenced to 16 months behind bars and was released in 2009.

A witness said that his family members rushed outside after Cali was gunned down.

Weiss explains that the younger Gotti and Cali had often clashed 30 years ago, and upon his return, reignited their feud.
