The Drew men’s tennis team opened the spring season by losing 8-1 to New York University on February 28th. NYU captured its first win of the spring and handed Drew (2-1) their first loss of the year.
The lone bright spot for the Rangers was provided by the number one doubles team of Raul Smego (’13) and Djedjy Hill (’13), who beat Harveer Bhalla and Aaron Meltzer in a close match, 9-8. With the win, Smego moved into sole possession of sixth place on Drew’s doubles wins list by winning his 50th career doubles match.
After going 2-1 in the doubles portion of play, the Rangers looked to turn around their fortunes in singles play.
Smego and Hunter Lathrop (’16) both held early leads in their singles matches, going up 6-4 and 6-3 respectively after the first set of both their matches. However, Smego would lose decisively in the next two sets, dropping them 6-0 and 6-3. Lathrop put up more of a fight, pushing both his sets into tiebreakers. Unfortunately, he dropped both sets 7-6 and 10-5.
The rest of the team went 0-4 in their respective matches, losing them in two sets each.
The match was the final preparation for the team’s spring break trip to Virginia. The Rangers will face Virginia Wesleyan, Salisbury and Christopher Newport in a three-day span before starting their quest for a 14th consecutive conference title. They will open conference play at Susquehanna University on Saturday March 16th at 1 p.m.
